Azucena Sanchez is a media artist whose work explores the intersection of life, science, and technology. Born in 1989 in Mexico City, she earned a BA in Graphic Design from La Salle University. In 2015, she moved to Germany to pursue a master’s degree in Medienkunst at Bauhaus Universität. Her works include bio media, tech-sculpture, multimedia, and site-specific installations that have been featured in international group exhibitions at Kulturhaus Neuperlach in München, Transmediale, Schillerpalais, and TopLab in Berlin, as well as STWST as part of Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria, and MUCA in Mexico City.
Azucena works in a hybrid studio space that includes a ‘kitchen lab’ setup, where she collaborates with myriad organisms and living entities. She enjoys working both in the open field and within the controlled environment of a lab or artist studio, always leaving room for experimentation. Azucena sees her role as an artist as a mediator between nature and humanity, creating new forms of communication, coexistence and mutual understanding. Her work is a collaborative effort involving living and non-living organisms to explore their potential as interconnected entities and create new dialogues of resilience in the face of social and ecological crises.
